As a reminder, summer is approaching and we all need to be mindful of keeping the grass and weeds trimmed no higher than 6 inches as Borough Ordinance requires.

And a reminder to parents - School is coming to a close and for anyone under the age of 18, there is a curfew of 10:00 p.m. which is enforced by the Police Department.

FREE YOUTH CRAFTS

Free youth crafts will once again be held this summer with our very capable Instructor Margie Vinski. Classes will be held on June 12th, June 26th, July 10th, July 24th, ages 3-8 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. and ages 9-16 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. at the Etna playground.

FREE ADULT CRAFT INSTRUCTION

This year we are trying something a little different, but very exciting. We have engaged local artist Holland Williams who will be partnering with Etna’s own Ceramics Instructor, Elaine Glassner for a mosaic work of art for the entire community to enjoy. The participants will be painting ceramic tiles. The tiles will be put together like puzzle pieces to make a unique work of art designed by Holland to express our community’s heritage and vibrancy. The artwork will be permanently installed near the little league entrance to William Dougherty Veteran’s Memorial Field.

Classes will be held at Bob’s Ceramic Studio, 353 Butler Street, Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and Wednesday evenings for those of us who work from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., beginning June 18. Class size is limited, so sign up and register now.

Neighborhood Safety Program

The Allegheny County Department of Human Services and Pittsburgh Community Services, Inc. are providing a neighborhood safety program with free installation of security and safety hardware. This could include deadbolt locks, smoke detectors, door peepholes, house numbers, carbon monoxide detectors and lifelites. They are currently taking applications for free security/safety hardware for any Allegheny County residents who meet income guidelines. To schedule an appointment or ask questions, call 412-392-6467.

Property Owners

As required by Borough Ordinance, all property owners are required to inform the Borough either when a tenant is moving in or out of their rental property. This information is vital, especially when it comes to refuse pick-up, either by your property being missed as it was marked vacant, or billed as we were not informed that is was vacant.

RAMBLINGS

Did you see the wonderful article in the January 8, 2008 Post Gazette - business section on Winschel's Hardware? It was a great article and a great tribute to a long standing institution within our community. They have been in business since 1888 - 120 years!!!

We wish them continued success and hope you stop in to wish them Happy Anniversary in this, their 120th year!

Reverend Bryan Putze continues to collect used ink cartridges and toner cartridges to help people that could use a little extra cash, especially around the holidays. In both 2006 and 2007, they have given local families a gift card for a grocery store both at Christmas and Easter time. Boxes for collection are located in the lobby of the Municipal Building and at their home at 147 Dewey Street. They accept empty cartridges (not remanufactured). If you know of someone who could use their help, drop a piece of paper in either box with the name, address and phone number on it. They also accept old cell phones.
